TERMINATORS HAVE TO FEND OFF THE MERLINS

After a 9-1 pounding by the Terminators in the first half of the season the Merlins got off to a flying start in their return match. Ian Ruddock first toppled Trevor Pull, but this was then followed up by Bob Knights who played a stunner and pulled back from losing the first set to Charles Goddard to win the deciding set 21-18. Although Knights would later remark at “having incredibly good fortune” with “the last five points in the deciding game by a combination of nets and edges”, just getting into a playing position where any luck can pay off is worth credit alone. However, the Terminators began to fight back with a three set recovery for David Boatman against Roy Hurrell. And though both Hurrell and Knights would go on to defeat Pull, the ultimate treble from Boatman and a final doubles victory eventually won the match for the Terminators 6-4.

The Oddbods kept up their winning streak when they visited Water Lane to play Trimwise. Despite an excellent win for Barney Garrod against Eddie Fuller and two from Debra Faulkner, the Oddbods ploughed on the pressure with three for Ray Lee and a 6-4 team win. Dominators dropped a couple of points thanks to the Spartans hero, Tom Baxter, but Martin Peek maintained his one hundred percent record this season as the Dominators romped home 8-2. The Gorleston Conservatives started off well when Malcolm Vasey stole the opening set from Darren Swan 23-21. But the Tables must have been just warming up as they eventually racked up a 10-0 win.

In the second division the Beacons played Kites at Mill Lane. Despite some strong resistance from Phil Pettifer, who won all three of his games, the Beacons managed to snuff out their opponents with two wins each from John Smith and Mike Harvey, one from Derek Humphreys, and a good win in the doubles to boot. The Critters required assistance from young cadet Duncan Freeman for their return tie against the Sidewaves. But the former first division team showed little mercy and eradicated the Critter menace with ease. While the Hits gave out similarly punishment as they set about the Misfits, despite big hitting Jon Block’s attempts with a number of deuce and deciding sets, the Hits stormed to 10-0 win.
