COLLEGE WIN LEAGUE CUP
In their first season in the Lowestoft Table Tennis League, the East Norfolk Sixth Form College won the David Curtis Memorial Trophy in the Final of the League Cup last Friday. In a closer match than the eventual score line would suggest the College beat the reigning champions the Arrows. Darren Smith opened well as the Arrows Kevin Jones struggle to find his feet. Mike Woolston tempered the hard hitting Ryan Grimmer in three sets to give the College a confident head start. This early flush of wins continued as Dominic Cutter climbed the 13 point handicap against Lauren Jones and pulled back from one set and 14-20 down in the second to win 21-18 in the third decider. Woolston then gave the Arrows a mountain to climb when his second win left the College a full 4-0 ahead. Smith nearly put the result beyond doubt in the fifth game having recovered from a disastrous first set to take the second and force a decider, but Lauren Jones kept the Arrows hopes alive by making maximum use of her handicap and win her team’s first point. As the young faces of Grimmer and Cutter came to the table the Arrows hopes were about to hinge on just a few points. With impressive attacking from Grimmer and deep defending and counter-attacking from Cutter, the boys faced off at 20-20 with a single point to decide the set. What a time to foul serve; as fortune continued to favour the College team, Grimmer served straight into the net giving Cutter the one set advantage. The second set went a similar path and Grimmer began to creep ahead having replaced a broken racket for one he was completely unfamiliar with. However 5 stunning serves from Cutter turned the set around and a final stroke of luck on a net shot put the match beyond reach in just the 6th game 5-1. Woolston completed his games undefeated while Kevin Jones gave a late flurry with his 21-20 win in the third set of the penultimate match to give Arrows their second point. Darren Smith finished the evening as he started with a straight set win and a final score of 7-2 to the College. The trophy was presented by Sue Curtis.
