SHETLIFFE MAXIMUM FOR PIRANHAS

Terry Shetliffe played up from the second division for Piranhas last week and became the highest scoring player of the match. Whereas David Holland found the young Thomas Baxter too fast for his normally infallible defences, Shetliffe weathered the barrage from the young Spartan warrior with a combination of spin and speed and went on to win his game in the third set. Both Baxter and Colin Fortescue went on to win further points from Martin Drew and then take the doubles, but Shetliffe had already done enough damage and the Piranhas swam away with a 6-4 win.

After the excitement of the Men’s Singles on Championships Finals Night, and with both players on 100% league average before this match, the opening game for Terminators vs. Dominators should headlined with the Clash of the Titans, but Martin Peek failed to find anything resembling Titan form and was simply out played by the new Lowestoft Champion, Paul Wright Jnr, in two straight sets. Wright went on to collect all three points for the Terminators but the otherwise faultless play from Peek and with back up of both Stuart Baxter and Andy Green the Dominators went on to win the match 7-3 and extend their commanding lead over the first division.

Stephen Cruickshanks stuck early for the Tables with a third set win over Ian Ruddock, however while his other two matches also required a deciding set Cruickshanks couldn’t deliver further. Wally Ladmore found the Merlins easier prey with a full house of straight two sets wins and Eddie Mason was looking to notch up his own three of a kind had it not been for his final game encounter against Roy Hurrell.

The Gorleston Conservatives called upon the support of David Willis from the second division but little could be done to prevent Trimwise slicing trough ranks. Paul Wright Snr, Philip Tye and Debra Faulkner all pick up maximums on the way to a 10-0 whitewash.

There were similar big wins in the second division. The Kites made zero impact on the Sidewaves who are sailing ahead in the division, and the Shakers similarly smashed Misfits on their visit to Water Lane. The Arrows may have fallen the same way when they face the Hits, but Kevin Jones struck centre target against Tony Mitchell to score their only point of the match.

The Arrows fared better the Team Knockout semi final with their hefty 275 handicap advantage. The Piranhas top guns were out in force but they failed to keep the Arrows below the average of six points a set they required, and double figure scores for Kevin Jones against both Ryan Moore and David Holland, and a 9 point set for Stuart Faulkner proved enough for the Arrows to win by 11 points.

In the Blue Riband Cup quarter final, the Terminators beat the Spartans despite Thomas Baxter defeating both Charles Goddard and David Boatman. They’ll face Sidewaves in the semi finals after swept the Critters aside 7-2.
