STUNNING RESULT FOR GORLESTON

The Waveney Terminators were in for a surprise when they visit the Conservatives Gorleston venue. Albeit without two of their stronger players, the Terminators, who are currently placed second in the division, may have expected an easier time from one of this season’s promoted sides. But the Conservatives were a player short and took the wise decision to bring up Terry Shetliffe from the second division to assist. As Conservatives forged a 5-2 lead David Boatman took the helm and the match was 5-4 with the doubles to play. Boatman and Trevor Pull took the first set, but with Shetliffe able to take advantage of some high returns from Malcolm Vasey service, the pair won a close second set. Again the Terminators stormed in front and led 19-16 in a pulsating final set before Vasey and Shetliffe secured a surprising victory 23-21.

The Conservatives were in action again in a postponed match from the first league week. However the Tables would offer much firmer resistance. Eddie Mason and Darren Swan won three a piece with only two points dropping as first Malcolm Vasey defeated Stephen Cruickshanks in a third set and then an on loan David Willgoss repeated the act in only two. Piranhas meanwhile continue to struggle to present a full team and had to borrow their own Sidewaves player. But while Ernie George claimed another straight three, David Holland lost a deciding set 24-22 to Philip Tye and Paula Newrick couldn’t make any ground. Trimwise may decide this was a lucky escape even though the Piranhas swan away with a 6-4 victory. Besides the Dominators keep doing what they know best with another 10-0 victory, this time with the Merlins as the victims.

In the second division the Hits were in fine fighting form. Dave Logan and Martyn Gregory each claimed maximum scores and while Mick Bayfield dropped the ball in his game against David Willis, he hit back with victory against Bernard Warnes. It was even honours at Mil Lane when the Critters struggled to keep level against the Beacons. John Smith picked up his game against Chris Trindall after a wayward first set and then went on to complete his three from three. With one a piece from Derek Humphries and Mike Harvey, the Critters had to claw back a draw in the doubles.

The Arrows struggled once again in league play but they found better form in the handicapped League Cup semi final. The Spartans were hard pressed when they lost the first three games, but persistence paid off and they rallied to 4-3. However Tom Petiffer hadn’t faltered all match and claimed the fifth point for Arrows when he capped off his evening beating Colin Fortescue. The Arrows will now face the winners of the Dominators-Misfits in the League Cup Final to be held next Thursday 17th December in Water Lane Leisure Centre Table Tennis Room at 7.30pm.
