BAXTER BOYS BIG NIGHT OUT
With the
Mill Lane Beacons reduced to two players through a mixture of illness and
holidays, their match against the Hits at Water Lane was always gong to be difficult.
But young Josh Baxter put in a scintillating performance to win all three of
his games against the more experienced hit masters. With a single win for Mike
Harvey and the doubles between them, the Beacons pulled together enough points
to scrape an unexpected draw. While over at Mill Lane his elder brother Thomas was
exterminating Terminators with a treble of his own, and all while also finding
time to win two matches on a neighbouring table in a Yarmouth League match.
However Spartan points otherwise sparse and Baxter assistance was need again in
the doubles to drag four points from the match which eventually was won by
Terminators.
The Mill Lane side were in action again against
the Dominators in a match postponed from the first week of the league season.
The spirited Spartans were unable to prevent Waveney Dominators from posting a
convincing victory in their opening league game of the
09/10 season. Thomas Baxter defeated his name sake Stuart Baxter
for the Spartans only point of the night but fell just short when he
failed to convert a match point against Luke Casewell
eventually losing 22-20 in the third. Colin Fortescue
battled gamely all night and deservedly took a set off Caswell in his opening
singles match. However, it was business as usual for the reigning
champions who ran out comfortable 9-1 winners in a good spirited
match.
Dominators
then continued their success with a 7-3 victory over Trimwise. Luke Caswell
converted all three games to points to leave the Dominators now two wins from
two. The Piranhas meanwhile had Merlins to hunt. Ryan Moore defeated all three
of the Mutford based team despite dropping a set 26-28 to Ian Ruddock. Two wins
Roy Hurrell against David Holland and Martyn Drew
prevented a Merlin mauling and they came away with a respectable three points.
In the
second division Shakers played host to the Critters. In a game where no player
could take complete control, Ashley Sonnex rattled
out a surprise win against Graham Lawson in two successive deuce sets. Lawson
then settled of score against Bernard Warnes but then
fell foul of Dave Willis.
