TABLE TENNIS ENTERS A NEW SEASON

The opening matches of the Lowestoft Table Tennis Season were played last week with all three groups of the League Cup David Curtis Memorial Trophy. This competition uses an individual handicap system allowing players with different abilities to compete on an equal level and often produces exciting games that require considered tactics and composure from both players. These matches were no exception managing to deliver everything they promised.

Reg Cadmore’s three in a row helped the Gorleston based Conservatives team hold off the visiting Sidewaves 6-3 and start their season with a promising win. Trimwise meanwhile found the going tougher against the Merlins, despite a maximum score from Philip Tye, the Mutford team held firm and stole a 5-4 win. The Tables got off the a poor start when they not only dropped 8 points to a frenzied Piranha attack but also got confused over the League Cup scoring system, it’s a point per game not per set in this competition. Dominators meanwhile made the most of a two-man Shakers team with a smashing 8-1 win. The Spartans – Hits bout at Mill Lane was an evenly matched affair with no player from either team managing a clean sheet. Sophie and Kevin Baker, along with teammate Colin Fortescue held the Spartan line with 2 points a piece and a 6-3 Spartan win. While Josh Baxter and John Smith each collected all 3 points and gave the Beacons a flying start with a 6-3 win over the Misfits. And the Critters found themselves in the middle of an Arrow storm when Stuart Faulkner picked off all three for himself and helped is team to a 7-2 win and healthy start.
